The Battalion held the Inter-Company Boxing Competition at The Maida
Gymnasium, Aldershot on the 17th December 2003.
The event was a great success which saw many months of preparation for the
boxers and those involved in the organisation of the event. Thanks go to the
Company Team Captains, namely;
Special thanks go to Sgt (SI) Bennett and CSgt Donaghy for their efforts in
organising the event, and to all the Army Boxing Association for allowing
the Battalion for the use of the Madia Gym.
It should also be noted that many boxers took part in this competition in
the prelims that lasted for two days prior to this event. Although those
boxers did not qualify for the final, they showed courage and determination
to get in the ring and compete in the event. Well done to ALL who took part
in the prelims.
Amateur Boxing is a sport, it must not be confused with fighting or
professional boxing. It is a sport where two components of similar ability
and weight try to outwit each other by their boxing skill and fitness. They
must abide by the rules of Amateur Boxing. They will be controlled by a
referee whose duties are:
"To prevent both boxers from receiving unnecessary punishment and to ensure
that boxers conform to the rules of boxing and do not take unfair advantage.
Boxing calls for fitness, alertness, self-discipline, courage and skills.
These of course are attributes which are required by members of the Armed
Forces".
