1. Second to None (E X C L U S I V E):
More chapters from this remarkable book are
now online, read more here
...
About the book!
Jack was determined not to be trapped in the black hell
hole of the Deepcar mines like his father and finally,
escapes to join the elite force of the British army, the
Coldstream Guards, where he carries his father's boxing
skills to the ultimate heights and then experiences a
love and passion he didn't know could exist, changing
his life forever.
His love is left behind as his Division leads the
British Expedition Forces off to a war to end all wars,
facing unbelievable horrors. Trying to survive in an
insane world of terror, slaughter and constant death.
Annie was born in the poor house and raised in poverty,
neglected and cast aside by her mother. Torn from her
grandfather at a young age, the only person who had ever
loved her, and raised in a Dr. Barnardo's home where
death came to seek her. Fighting to survive and finally
finding a love that could cost her her life.
Two people whose lives were set on a collision course
that was filled with loneliness, misery, pain and
heartache, tempered by passion and love. Based on real
people who laid the foundation for a new generation.

1. Sergeants' Mess Farewell Dinner to WO1 & Mrs NJ Hicks:
Fresh back
from Summer Leave, the Sergeants’ Mess said farewell in true
Coldstream Style to WO1 Nigel Hicks and his good lady, Elaine.
Considering that there is only a few free
weekends before the Battalion depart on numerous training exercises
with a very busy time table ahead, the turn out of the Sergeants’
Mess was outstanding. Pre drinks were served before dinner, and most
stood outside the Sergeants’ Mess taking advantage of the excellent
evening outside. The traditional dinner call was sounded and all
took their places in the bar, waiting for the top table guests to
arrive. Rumours then circulated that the nominee to say the
traditional grace before dinner had not been chosen and someone
would probably be ‘wallied’........ read more
about this event including many images here.
2. A Tribute to the 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards:
The 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards paraded for the last time on the
31st July 1993 and was officially placed into Suspended Animation on
the 31st of December 1993. In June/July/August of 1993 some serving
members formed No. 7 Company, others joined the 1st Battalion in
Munster, Germany - just in time for the Bosnia Tour in November
1993. All members of the 2nd Battalion presented a booklet
containing a nominal roll of the Battalion, history of the Second
Battalion and many fantastic images from Exercises to the Queens
Birthday Parade.
To preserve the history of the 2nd Battalion, we have scanned the
images of the booklet for your enjoyment.......

2. Regimental Association Day:
Saturday 12th July 2008 saw the annual Regimental Association Day,
held at Victoria Barracks, Windsor and in the week’s lead up to the
event it rained every day so deep down most were prepared for a ‘Wet
Coldstream Day’. Most were amazed however, when clouds managed to

day stayed mostly dry.

4.
New Hougoumont Farm Images unveiled in the Sergeants' Mess:
On Friday 11th July 2008, the Regimental Sergeant Major and Mayoress
of Windsor unveild the Sergeants' Mess new images of Hougoument
Farm. The pictures are two images of the same scene, but with
a different prospective in each image. In one image you can see the
French coming as you stand on the wall of Hougomont, and in the
other you are with the French looking towards the wall. What makes
these images unique is that they are a snapshot of the same scene,
with the same soldiers in each picture. They are truly magnificent
images from no doubt the finest military artist in the world (our
opinion) Chris Collingwood. Read and
see more from the unveiling here.

The 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards - WORLD
CHAMPION PACESTICKERS!
Last week saw the annual World Championship Pacesticking Competition
in Sandhurst. As usual, teams from all over the world entered,
some of them had been practicing for months for this elite
competition - unfortunately not for the Coldstream Guards Team.
All will be aware that the last couple of months has been extremely
busy for the Battalion with Afghanistan, leave, then the Queens
Birthday Parade, so it won't come too much as a shock to know that
the team that represented the Coldstream Guards were seen practicing
at lunch breaks and basically whenever the team could get together.
It shows the quality, perseverance and adaptability of the
Coldstreamers in the team who took first place in this
outstanding competition.
The Commanding Officer, Regimental Sergeant Major and all members of
the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards would like to congratulate the
team in their remarkable performance;
Driver: WOII (CSM) S Wright
Right Marker: CSgt Bell
Centre: Drum Major Roberts
Left Marker: LSgt Amer
The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst A Team came runners up in the
Competition, and there were a number of Coldstreamers in the 'Stick
Off' for the Best Sticker of the Day. The Drum Major (Ben
Roberts), LSgt Amer and CSgt Taylor (now All Arms Drill Wing, was
Drum Major) were all in the running for the prize but it was
eventually given to another fellow Guardsman (CSM) from the Scots
Guards.
We have been promised images from the event, but if you attended and
have any please send them into us at

All in all a FANTASTIC DAY!

The Coldstream A-Z Section:
The Coldstream A to Z Section is slowly being built up. You

Apologies for the delay in updating the site, the Battalion have
recently returned from some richly deserved POTL (Post Operational
Tour Leave) after the very demanding tour to Afghanistan on Op
Herrick 7, and I have moved roles within Battalion.
I have thousands of images and stories that will be added to the
site over the forthcoming weeks from the tour, including the
Battalion Op Herrick 7 DVD that was recently published by WOII
‘Murph’ Murphy of the Training Wing. That said, if any members of
the Battalion have any images or stories from the Battalion or
indeed in general pass them onto me and I’ll get them on the site.
What’s happened since the last update?
Onto Planet Coldstream and what can I say apart from hectic! The
Battalion returned from leave at the start of the month, with many
seniors and officers having to return the Saturday prior to take
part in the first rehearsal of the Queens Birthday Parade. On the
Monday the Battalion were paraded on the main square from Spring
Drills and Street Lining Preparation, many of the Battalion will
line the streets of ‘The Mall’ on the Troop. Locals got quite a
shock when the practice moved out of barracks as hundreds of
Coldstreamers marched out of the front gate and over the main road
to line the long walk as part of the rehearsal.
History was made
as the long walk has never been used before for
this kind of rehearsal and it was an amazing site that many of the
media were present for. The new Commanding Officer, Lt Col Toby Gray
was present in full ceremonial dress keeping a watchful eye of
expertise over the Battalion, more and a complete profile on the
Commanding Officer on the next update.
There of also been (or will be shortly) a number of changes to key
personnel in the Battalion;
Lt Col TW Gray has taken over as Commanding Officer.
Major DP Hall has taken over as Company Commander HQ Coy.
Major AP Jasinski has taken over as QM (Quartermaster).
Capt N Overton has taken over as the TQM or QM(T) (Technical
Quartermaster).
Capt Dale will shortly be taking over as
RCMO (Regimental Careers
Management Officer), all change Capt Dale is now the
UWO (Unit Welfare Officer).
Capt M Etherington will shortly be taking over as MTO (Mechanical
Transport Officer).
Capt A Hunter will shortly be taking over as
UWO (Unit Welfare
Officer), all change Capt Hunter is now the RCMO
(Regimental Careers Management Officer)
WOII (DSgt) Andy Jones & WOII (DSgt) Danny Gibson
have recently
taken over as Battalion Drill Sergeants.
WOII J Sheard has taken over as the RRWO (Regimental Recruiting
Warrant Officer).
WOII A Stokes has taken over as the RQMS (Regimental Quartermaster
Sergeant).
WOII S Jones has taken over as the TQMS (Technical Quartermaster
Sergeant).
WOII Taylor recently took over as CSM 1 Coy (Company Sergeant
Major).
WOII C Pote recently took over as CSM 2 Coy.
WOII P Addenbrooke recently took over as CSM HQ Coy.
(WOII S Wright is still CSM 3 Coy and
WOII R Wright is still CSM SP
Coy).
WOII Thayre has recently taken over as the RSWO (Regimental Signals
Warrant Officer).
And last but not least, as previously mentioned, I have moved from
the Welfare Office and now work along side the RCMO with a couple of
hats, my role with the RCMO is to take on CLM (Command Leadership
and Management) and Basic Skills, and my other hat(s) are ArmyNet
and ShinyCapstar. The last couple of days have required so much of
the grey matter upstairs that I was too busy for anything else, but
things should settle down now and we promise more regular updates.
Read more about what CLM and Basic Skills are here.
Now and the Future .... Saturday the 14th June 2008 sees the Welsh Guards Troop their Colour
to celebrate the Queens Birthday Parade (for
info on this parade click here), with the 1st Battalion taking up the duties of
Street Lining and Number 7 Company taking part in the Parade as
Number 6 Guard, more images from this event will follow.
This year (2008) the Escort, numbers 2 & 3 were formed from the
Welsh Guards, 4 Guard was formed from Nijmegan Company Grenadier
Guards, 5 Guard was formed from F Company Scots and Number 7 Company
formed 6 Guard. Those who watched the parade may also have
spotted Major General W Cubbitt (Coldstream Guards) GOC London
District and Major G Bartle Jones (Welsh Guards) who was the Field
Officer for the Parade and is at present the Second in Command of
the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards.
The Battalion Forecast of Events has been published and shows a very
busy but very rewarding timeline, including some events listed
below;
June:
Sailing and a Battalion Diving Expedition to Gibraltar.
JNCO , Sniper and Combat Comms Cadres.
The World Paced Sticking Championship.
The Battalion Golf Tour in.
July:
Adventure Training – Sailing.
A Sky Dive Adventure Training Exercise to France.
The Regimental Association Day.
Battle Group Planning.
August:
In Barracks training and Summer Leave.
With major training and exercise events to follow in the forthcoming
months.
The good news is that a date has been ‘booked’ for Hanging the
Brick, with the following day being a Battalion Fun Run in Fancy
Dress – normally the said few try and avoid people the morning after
the brick …………. now they can stay as they were and pop out for a bit
of early morning PT (not recommended, but should be entertaining to
say the least!).

OLDER NEWS
What's
this - have ShinyCapstar been sent images of the Commanding Officer,
Lt Col GCC Waters playing with his band - the Red Hot Guardsmen?
NO ............ it's images from the recent Regimental Dinner of
Col Waters and his good lady wife showing just how much they are
'very good sports'.
A fantastic evening with good food and very good company.
The following is an extract from the Army MOD Site that best
explains CLM.
The aim of the Basic Skills soldiers' education programme is to
improve the performance of soldiers both in barracks and on
operations. The Command, Leadership and Management courses prepare
soldiers for the tasks that they will undertake during their
military careers. This is supported by a Basic Skills package.
The programmes develop leadership and management skills, as
soldier’s progress through the ranks, covering Basic Skills,
leadership, management, and the development of professional military
knowledge. The skills and qualifications that soldiers gain are
accredited and are therefore transferable to civilian life once they
leave the Army.
The Army is committed to improving the standard of Basic Skills. In
line with the Government's Basic Skills agenda, all soldiers are
required to reach Level 1 and Level 2 in literacy and numeracy as
they progress through their careers.
Educational and Training Services officers, along with 40 MOD Basic
Skills Tutors, deliver a comprehensive package of Basic Skills
support to soldiers, both in barracks and on operations
The following is an extract from the Army MOD Site that best
explains CLM.
Command Leadership and Management (CLM) is a new course introduced
in January for all non-commissioned officers (NCOs). "The Army is
known for its leadership in the field, but we were finding that this
wasn't transferring back to the barracks," adds Colonel Chris
Caswell, chief of staff of the Educational and Training Services (ETS)
Branch of the Adjutant General's Corps.
The course took three years to develop and was built from scratch
with the best management and leadership thinking available. It is
designed to give soldiers a toolkit of practices and procedures as
they progress through the ranks from Lance Corporal to Warrant
Officer Class 1 (WO1), the highest rank a soldier can reach. Content
is mapped onto national standards including BTEC and NVQ and runs
from GCSE right up to postgraduate level.
The course is delivered through a combination of education and
training to prepare a soldier for promotion to the next rank. The
Army aims to put 7,500 soldiers through modules of the course each
year. Although it's still early days as far as feedback is
concerned, the Army 'rumour service' website has featured positive
discussion about CLM at soldier level.
In effect, it is HR management training for the soldier, says
Caswell, stressing that it is fairly 'ground-breaking stuff' for the
Army.
"We're very excited about it," he says. "Modules in the course
include change management and 360-degree appraisals - a radical
concept for such a hierarchical organisation."

SHINYCAPSTAR
UPDATE STATUS
Some sections of the site have
been updated, some sections have been added and some sections are
still to come.
1. HOME
PAGE: a
total redesign with easier navigation (I think?), and more stuff to
be added, but it now features direct RSS Feeds of the latest 'Army &
MOD News, plus a scroller that tells you the most popular links on
the site. Two new features of the front page will be updated on a
regular basis, 'In the Spotlight' and 'Site Feature' will be updated
on a regular basis just in case anyone misses something. Polls
have also been re-introduced, we'll see how these pan out. The
'Shout-box' has been dropped due to potential spam messages being
left.
2. REGIMENTAL HISTORY SECTION:
the
Regimental
History Section has been long due an update, not that we missed
anything the first time, just tidying up a little. The main
'Regimental
History' page has been updated (to look a little like a
newspaper - le me know what you think). From there, I kind of
got carried away and started updating various pages to the History
Section, including a re-vamped VC Section with added images, and
Medal Entitlements of each VC Winner. Obviously this section
alone is HUGE so please bear with it and keep checking back for
extra features, including ............................. 'The
Time-Lines'. I am working on two timeline projects, the first
being a pictorial timeline (see work in progress here), the second
being an interactive timeline of Coldstream Campaigns from 1970
(read more about this exciting project here).
3. THE
A to Z SECTION:
this section will be updated as time progresses. I was
e-mailed by someone ages ago asking about a particular article and
had to trawl through updates. I thought why not have an A t Z
of all things Coldstream and hyperlink frenzy!
4.
EASTER EGGS:
no this isn't a
ploy at getting some more choccy in April (I've had enough thanks),
but the terminology used for internet trap doors. I have
started introducing some secret links on the site (called Easter
Eggs) that will give you some information and images that no one
else will see!
5. PAST,
PRESENT & FUTURE:
a couple of pages I
am working on portraying a Coldstreamer at various stages.
6. A
NEW ICON:
I was messing about in Photoshop and created a new icon for
ShinyCapstar. Yeah, I know it's not very Web2.0 friendly but
come on ................ !
7. CRISP LOOK - CLEAN FEEL:
the look and feel
of ShinyCapstar will change over the next couple of weeks/months as
all pages will be filtered to the new template. I have to do
this manually to each page (copy and paste) as I am still using MS
Frontpage (booo hiss). Hopefully we will do away with those
irritating animations that were so popular at Shiny's birth and have
background image free pages. Before someone says it, yeah -
all this will probably be back in web fashion by the time I change
everything!
8. FEED
BACK:
ShinyCapstar is
still holding on .................. just! But
we need your
feedback so we can; a. pass it to those that require to see it and
post your remarks online and b. take your points onboard and
hopefully make things even better!
9. CELINE DION:
no she's not one of
my favourite artists, and no I'm not cracking up - yet! She
did, however, have a hit with the classic 'All By Myself', which
incidentally is ME, the Shinycapstar Team. Want to help, you
can by sending in images, stories, articles, scans - anything that
can take this site to a new level. We have a
YouTube account
for videos and the Gallery will soon be updated with some new and
improved software. Send anything onto us via the 'Contact
Page'
10. OP HERRICK 7:
as I write this
post there is only a few days until the Battalion are complete and
have returned to Windsor, with the Welcome Home Parade taking place
on the 26th April. I have just taken delivery of thousands of
images and videos (thanks to Lt Weddell) that will shortly be added
to galleries on the
Herrick Section
and made into short videos for the
YouTube Section.
THE
TOMMY LEECH APPEAL
-
FUNDRAISING APPEAL
. >>
Tommy needs our help.
L/Sgt. Carl Leech who lost his life in a car
accident travelling home to Middlesbrough from his
post at Catterick. Not only did he leave a widow but
a very young son Tommy who tragically was born
without ears and hearing, operations to rectify this
could not be done till he reached the age of 10.
Tommy has now undergone tests which determined that
this is possible, but can only be done in Germany at
the cost of £50,000.

SHINYCAPSTAR IS CURRENTLY HAVING A SERVICE
It is inevitable that some pages will still have the 'old' template,
if this is the case please give us time.
The only other option was to close the site completely whilst we
apply the changes !
