LCPL FREDERICK WILLIAM DOBSON, VC.
Frederick William Dobson was born on 9th November 1886 at
Ovingham, Northumberland. He enlisted into the Coldstream
Guards at Newcastle on 7th July 1906.
He served at home for
three years before transferring to the Reserve on 7th July
1909.
He was recalled to the colours on 6th August 1914 and went
to France with the 2nd Battalion. He was awarded the
Victoria Cross for gallantry at Chavonne. He was discharged
on 1st July 1917 being classed as “no longer physically fit
for further war service” as a result of his wounds.
He obtained work as a cimema commissionaire but he suffered
much pain and spent long periods in hospital. He died in
Newcastle General Hospital on 13th November 1935.
As well as the VC, he was also awarded the 1914 Star and
Bar, British War Medal, Victory Medal and the Russian Order
of St George (4th Class). He was also Mentioned in
Dispatches. Three of his medals were found in a Newcastle
pawn shop in 1936 and in accordance with the wishes of the
Dobson family they were returned to the Regiment. In 1988,
Dobson’s daughter-in-law contacted the Regiment offering the
two missing medals. Apparently Dobson’s son had had the
medals and intended to present them to the Regiment, but he
never quite got around to it.
