GUARDSMAN

NAME:
Guardsman O’Brien
AGE:
23
OCCUPATION:
Infantry signaller
REGIMENT:
1st Battalion Coldstream Guards
I joined the Coldstream
Guards in February 2002 from school.
At first I was interested in driving tanks, then I found out
the Coldstream Guards were my local Infantry Regiment. As I
gathered more information on this I realised that this is
what I wanted and that the infantry was most definitely for
me.
Basic training was tough, hard work and long hours but I
fought on and got through it. One of my proudest moments was
passing out in front of my family and friends in Catterick
after the Combat Infantryman’s Course. I really enjoyed
using the many different weapon systems that we were trained
on. I have gained a lot of vocational qualifications, and
all my driving licences, including motorcycle.

When I was posted to the Coldstream Guards I was a rifleman
in Number 2 Company, 7 platoon. I deployed on many training
exercises (some overseas) to build on my soldiering skills
and learnt to work as a member of a section in a Platoon.
After a few years of doing this I then decided to use my
skills and advance them by becoming an infantry signaller.
I have been deployed overseas in Iraq (op Telic 2005) and
most recently Afghanistan (op Herrick 2007-08).
My job as a signaller is to provide and maintain
communications between the troops on the ground back to the
headquarters. This is a vital role and I have gained a lot
of experience during the time I have served, I have also
worked with some outstanding and well respected people.
Joining the Coldstream Guards has definitely been the best
decision I have made, I have made friends for life and enjoy
the diversity of the jobs that I am required to do.
