- GUARDSMAN

NAME:
Guardsman Lee Rendall

AGE:
19

OCCUPATION:
Recruit Support Team

REGIMENT:
1st Battalion Coldstream Guards

I live in Essex and joined the Coldstream Guards in May 2006 from school.

I had always been very keen on fitness; at school I was doing lots of sport. I was interested in joining the Army from a very young age, but wasn’t sure on what job within I wanted to do.

After talking to the Recruiting Sergeant in the Army Careers office about the different job roles in the Army, I decided to choose the Coldstream Guards.

I was 17 years of age when I started the Combat Infantrymen’s Course at ITC Catterick. The basic training was tough and demanding but I enjoyed pushing myself to the limit. I passed out of training on the 1st of December 2006; the hard work had finally paid off. I felt proud that day and a part of something special.

".........after we came out of the bush we then had 1 week adventure training and 1 week Rest and Recuperation. I went on Safari, visited Roark’s Drift (from the film Zulu) and did some white water rafting....."

On the 2nd of January 2007, I was posted to the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, where I joined Number 1 Company, 3 Platoon. At the end of January 2007, I went on my first exercise with the Company. The exercise was overseas to South Africa; we spent four weeks on exercise which was really interesting especially because of the heat and different environment. After we came out of the bush we then had 1 week adventure training and 1 week Rest and Recuperation. I went on Safari, visited Roark’s Drift (from the film Zulu) and did some white water rafting. It was really good to do these activities which I would probably never have the chance to do if it weren’t for the Coldstream Guards. It was like being on holiday but getting paid for it!

I spent a few more months in 1 Company, where I was put on my Cat B (car) driving course and took part in Public duties whilst we were based in Windsor. Public Duties were good fun, rewarding and full of proud moments; I also got to see parts of the Royal Palaces and Castles that I would never have the opportunity to do so.

I am now posted to the Recruit Support Team. I spend a lot of time on the road, up and down the country visiting Army Cadet Forces, summer shows and Army Careers offices.

Twice a month I help run the Coldstream Guards Look at Life courses – you never know we might meet soon!
