1st Battalion Coldstream
Guards
HQ COY 1 COLDM GDS ADVENTURE TRAINING EXERCISE
AT THE
FREMINGTON AT CAMP
The exercise was led by CSgt Thompson
assisted by Sgt Sawyer (ASPTI) & Sgt Hughes, taking 13 students made out 6
attached arms AGC, REME, RLC, with the rest being Coldstreamers for a bit of
fun and adventure.
First day of arrival were normal formalities like signing for gear
introducing and dividing participants into the various activities, which
were rock climbing at Baggy Point. Quite a challenging lesson enabling
students to face some of their worst fears and strengths, down sailing and
climbing up a steep and roughed hill of 4500ft for a first time was quite an
epic and a breaking point in the lives of students.
Caving in north Devon was intriguing especially going through tunnels you
can just make oneself squeeze through and not knowing were it ends was a
chiller and unprecedented, nevertheless lots of fun as jumping into paddles,
leopard crawling through the mud and squeezing yourself through confined
spaces brings lots of your basic infantry skills into play.
Kayaking and wind surfing at the Westwood beach is something to write home
about as it was full of water splashing incorporated with lots of drowning
for the less versatile swimmers in the sea, these sports defines stability,
a systematic approach both on a kayak or on a surf board, anyway who cares
most of the time it feels like one was on holiday rather than training.
Down sailing in the fremington camp was not pleasant but challenging and
exciting with all respect of which the Commanding Officer Lt Col GCC Waters
took part to the surprise of all participants.
With all said and done the training exercise was very prudent and successful
and worth the time we spent away from our normal routine at work, importance
of team bonding knowing peoples strong and weak points and making new
friends.

HEADQUARTER COMPANY
The Company have been busy engaged in supporting the Battalion
and participating in the heavy spate of summer Public duties.
However, as those who have been engaged in public duties before
will testify to. the routine can become a grind after a while so
it is always good to break it up. This we have managed to
achieve by sending a number of individuals away on interesting
out of barracks training and operations. Throughout the summer
HQ Company has had individuals away in such
diverse locations as Gibraltar. Malawi. Canada. Iraq and of
course deployed on Salisbury plain. The Company has also been
engaged in some other distractions in the form of adventure
training, the Regimental Association Day and the Commanding
Officers competition which HQ Company are currently leading the
field in. having acquitted ourselves well in the volleyball,
orienteering and tug-o-war since the last edition of the
newsletter was published.
Finally, looking ahead the Company will as ever face a busy
period throughout the autumn supporting and participating in
exercises and training along with the remainder of the
battalion. Once again it is my intention to get as many members
of
the Company out of Barracks to not only hone their soldiering
skills, but also to add some variety into the routine. I hope
all had an enjoyable and relaxing summer break and as always due
to the turn over of individuals within the company I would like
to take this opportunity to welcome to the Company any members
and their families recently posted in and hope you enjoy the
time you spend with us.
Major R J HOWICK Company Commander HQ Company.
