Mortar Platoon on Salisbury Plain - November 2004.

A message from the Mortar Platoon Commander

"Due to lack of time the Mortars only had two days to squeeze the entire annual allocation of ammunition into, they spent two days back on Salisbury Plaine brushing up on their skills in double quick time.

By the end of the two day package, the platoon was firing complex fire plans and engaging targets with direct fire.

The Platoon worked very hard over the two days and learnt a great deal. The emphasis was very much on teaching the Mortar numbers their respective jobs as the Executives have had plenty of practice throughout the year supporting other exercises and on Courses. We managed to field two separate mortar Lines with all the safety required, the end result was a very busy “net” controlling the various fire missions from one OP.

It should perhaps be noted that the Coldstream Mortar Platoon is now not only one of the largest, but the most qualified platoon in the field Army to date."

Images from the Package

Below are a few photos from the training, thanks should be given to LSgt Julie Dick for taking the images and passing them onto us for all to see.

A particular note should be given to the excellent photograph of the mortar leaving the tube - excellent stuff!
