The troubles in Northern Ireland are rooted deep in history and are very complex. The recent troubles started in Belfast 1970August 1969 with rioting in Londonderry and the Government deployed troops onto the streets as a temporary measure to assist the Royal Ulster Constabulary restore order. Over thirty years later they are still there.

During the early years the troops were welcomed by the Catholic population who saw them as their protectors from Protestants. However, by the early 1970’s the pace of life had become fast and furious, with shootings and bombings almost a daily occurrence, and rioting most nights. As time has gone by, tactics and equipment have developed and the terrorist tactic became deliberate, planned ‘spectacular’ attacks rather than random and sporadic incidents. The Security Forces’ role became that of long hours of routineMayo Street 1970 patrolling and guarding bases, punctuated by short spells of incidents and intense activity.

To date, the Regiment has undertaken 20 tours of duty in Ulster ranging from two to twenty-four months. In addition, many A Warm WelcomeColdstreamers have served attached to other units as either individuals or small sub-units, and over the years many have served attached to Special Forces units or the Guards Independent Parachute Company which undertook several tours prior to its disbandment in 1975. No7 and No8 Companies are incremental companies which carried the colours of the 2nd Bn. They have both deployed to the Province with either the Scots Guards or the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire & Wiltshire Regiment (RGBW).

The Regiment has undertaken the following tours;
