Afghanistan - Op
Herrick 7 Section |

Welcome to the
OP Herrick 7 (Afghanistan) Section.
The Battalion deployed to Afghanistan during late
September and early October 2007. They are due to return
in April 2008. The original plan was for the
Battalion to deploy as a Battle Group, however this
changed before deployment and the Battalion was
split. We now have have Coldstreamers serving
in many different locations in Afghanistan. You can
use this section to follow the path of those
Coldstreamers serving in Afghanistan
(for update information
you should view the UPDATE SECTION).

A Message from the Commanding
Officer on ShinyCapstar & ArmyNet
I
view both ArmyNet and ShinyCapstar as an essential
communication tools, particularly at a time when the
Battalion is due to be deployed away.
I have directed that
ArmyNet should be kept up to
date with all the Battalion's goings on, so you
should be able to keep up to date with what we get
up to in Afghanistan. The webmaster will then
transfer Information from
ArmyNet to this site to
allow all to follow the Battalion in Afghanistan.
From this, you should note that the Coldstream
Guards
ArmyNet Site is updated on a regular basis
(sometimes 3 times a week!) and although the
Battalion is somewhat disparate, with different
sub-units spread widely across theatre, all elements
provide a weekly sitrep (where possible) so whether
you are interested in Number One Company in Kabul,
the Recce Platoon working with Battle Group South or
the Lashkar Gar Platoon working in Battlegroup
Centre you should be able to find out what is going
on.
Equally important though is that we have a website
that will provide an excellent forum for keeping the
families informed as to what is happening on the
home front. The
ArmyNet Site has a very popular
Welfare & Families link with details for the various
events which have been arranged for the families
whilst we are deployed.
We will also use this site and
ArmyNet to keep all
informed about any incidents as soon as the
information can be released (as and where security
allows us to do so).
Lieutenant Colonel GCC Waters
Commanding Officer
1st Battalion Coldstream Guards

So - what took
it so long to get the Afghanistan Section up?
Firstly, our sincere apologies for the delay in
updating this site and indeed adding an Afghanistan
section to ShinyCapstar. We made a decision
well before the Battalion deployed that we would not
add any information to ShinyCapstar regarding the
Battalion's tour to Afghanistan, this information
would ONLY be uploaded to the Coldstream
ArmyNet
Site. As all will (or should) know,
ArmyNet is
a secure section of the MOD Internet where units can
hold their own site, the down side is that only
those with a username and password (Military,
dependants and those with guest accounts) can access
and view sites.
Why did we do this you may ask? Well,
ArmyNet
has been around for a good few years and is
developing into a fantastic asset to those that can
access it. We were very conscious that a large
number of families and dependants had not created
accounts and were missing out on this fantastic
tool. We therefore decided that updates would
only go onto
ArmyNet to to 'nudge' everyone into
creating accounts.
Although we are very much aware that regular viewers
of ShinyCapstar suffered with no updates, our main
aim was to ensure that we had a line of direct
communication with families and dependants - and it
worked. We have had tremendous positive
feedback from many viewers of the
ArmyNet Site and
it is currently a Unit 'Spot Light Site' and has a
direct link to the Coldstream Site from
ArmyNet as
one of the most 'Popular Pages'. This shows of the
following, genuine interest and 'love' of the
Coldstream Guards! We will now endeavour to
keep the site updated with images and information
from Afghanistan although we CAN GUARANTEE that any
news displayed on this site WILL be at least 3 weeks
old due to security implications (in other words, if
you want the latest news from Planet Coldstream -

ARMYNET ACCOUNT).
