OP Herrick 7 (Afghanistan) UPDATE

Lashkar Gah Platoon Sitrep as at 17 Nov 07 (Archive)

The last few weeks have seen frantic activity within Lashkar Gah. The Platoon commanded by Mr Hayhurst and Sgt Phipps has been forward based to FOB ARNHEM in the Upper Gereshk Valley where they will maintain security of the area whilst Right Flank are released for manoeuvre operations elsewhere. Back in Lash’ LSgt Franks has been retrained to bump up the numbers of the PSYOPS Support Element and is now patrolling regularly in the local area. He came across his old boss the other day when Gen Dannatt, the Chief of the General Staff visited the base on the 14 Nov. LSgt Franks had been his driver in Bosnia many moons ago when the CGS was the Commander of 4th Armoured Brigade. Also accompanying the CGS was WO1 Pete Carr, now the Academy Sergeant Major of RMAS.

The AGC personnel continue to give sterling service. LSgt Toganivalu continues to support the Commanding Officer in his crusade to reform the Afghan Police whilst Cpl Mansfield toils away in the Helmand Executive Group under a mountain of paperwork, courtesy of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Our two chefs continue to slave away over hot ovens, and Pte Limbu was surprised and delighted to be promoted to LCpl by the Commanding Officer over the hotplate at dinner one night.

Sgt Walton and his G4 crew continue to hold together the QMs department. LCpl Colborne recently went on a whirlwind trip around various locations to account for stores and equipment and has returned with a big smile on his face. Obviously, he had an enjoyable little holiday.

Sgt Smith and his multiple remain committed to supporting the reform process for the Afghan Police, although they are counting the days until they are released to the Household Cavalry where they will form up as the Recce Platoon once more and operate in their traditional role.

By far the biggest event in Lashkar Gah recently has been the official opening of Coldstream Corner, just behind the QMs Compound. The work of LCpl Colborne and the other G4 Coldstreamers, Coldstream Corner is a blue, red, blue haven where all of the Lash’ Coldstreamers can retire to for a brew and escape the annoying habits of lesser mortals. The Commanding Officer kindly opened the oasis of calm, attended by those members of Her Majesty’s finest who were in station.
