MORTARS Sitrep as at 21 Dec 07
(Archive)
I realise it’s been a while since the last update; sincere
apologies but we’ve been out and about for the last couple of
months with no access to any email. It has once again been a
busy period where we have been working with a variety of nations
and units and once again living out of our Bergens (backpack).
We have remained split between a few different locations,
however luckily it looks like we will all be together for
Christmas – RAF permitting of course!! (the lack of helicopters
is a real pain). Both locations have had the chance to have some
fresh food over the last weeks with a chef being sent to each
location for a couple of days – very much appreciated.
We got to see some of the blokes from the Platoon who are
attached to the Royal Marines (Sgt “Butch” Steele’s section) a
few weeks ago as they passed through our area. They were all on
cracking form although itching to get stuck in as they had had
quite a quiet time.
Morale is still quite high, despite being Christmas time and the
half-way point of the tour. We have received lots of cards and
packages from civilians sent to “A Soldier on the front line –
Afghanistan ” which has been tremendous for morale. In some ways
these packages can mean as much to the blokes as a letter or
parcel from family/friends as it really makes them feel that we
have the public behind us. It also means that all the men should
have something to open at Christmas! So if you know anyone who
has done this please pass on our sincerest thanks.
On behalf of all of us let me thank you all for your letters and
packages. It is pretty much impossible for us to get to an email
terminal so letters are our primary way of staying in touch. The
mail out here is slow – some locations have only had 2
deliveries so far – but it does get through. You can either send
letters or an “E-Bluey” (an email that is printed out here and
sent to us as a letter – the fastest way) see below for the
