R & R (Rest and Recuperation)
Depending on the length of time away, the Soldier will be
entitled to a period of R&R and travel to and from the UK.
Entitlement will be confirmed once the soldier has deployed. As
a guide, a soldier on a 4-month tour could be granted 7 days
with 2 days for travel, and if on a 6month tour should be
granted 12 days plus 2 days travel time.
Important Note: Travelling time is included in the R&R Period
and you should be aware that the movements to and from theatre
are very fragile and subject to last minute changes.
This period of leave from the operation is looked forward to and
eagerly anticipated by all involved, but the reality can
sometime be a bit different. Having to rapidly readjust to home
life only to have to say goodbye again in a few days time can be
stressful. Please bear the following points in mind:
Partners…
Please DO NOT book holidays until your spouse is back home and
has confirmed his movements. The airbridge (between locations)
is fragile and delays are common place.
Remember that the R&R period includes travel time - expect there
to be at least two days of travelling and allow for any delays
to aircraft timings.
Try to chill out, relax, and just enjoy some quiet time as a
family. No moving house or major renovation projects!
Don’t make plans to do a whistle stop tour of all the relations
- he may just want to take it easy. Keep R&R plans flexible,
just do what you feel like whilst the soldier is home.
Not everyone will get home for Christmas – R & R needs to be set
up on a rotational basis so do not make any plans that involve
your loved getting home for Christmas.
Soldiers…
Don’t overdo things, or try to cram too many activities onto the
available time.
Do everything in moderation – and don’t hit the bottle!
