THE CURRENT BRITISH
ARMY DEPLOYMENT
The UK is continuing to provide a number of British military and
civilian personnel in support of NATO-led military operations in
Afghanistan (see image below). The UK contribution, which began
in October 2001 following the terrorist attacks on the United
States, helped to bring about the fall of the Taliban regime.
This subsequently paved the way for the first ever parliamentary
elections in Afghanistan, which took place in September 2005.
British Forces, under the command of the International Security
Assistance Force (ISAF) and along with US and other allies from
the international community, will continue to work with the new,
democratically elected Afghan Government to build stability and
maintain security across the country

WHAT IS ‘OPERATION
HERRICK 7’ ?
As part of NATO's expansion into Southern Afghanistan, a task
force including 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, under the
Command of Headquarters 52 Brigade, will deploy to Helmand
Province. The Brigades is to provide a secure and stable
environment in which the reconstruction of Helmand can take
place. They will work alongside forces from Canada, the
Netherlands, Denmark, Estonia and the US. Operation HERRICK is a
name given to this type of operation, to distinguish it from
other types of activity in the area.

WHY THE
DEPLOYMENT?
The International Community in Afghanistan is under a UN mandate
and as part of NATO and Coalition missions to:
Deny terrorists an ungoverned space in which they can foment and
export terror.
11 September taught us that terrorism thrives where there is no
stability, no effective government and no security.
Help the people of Afghanistan build a democratic state with
strong security forces and an economy that will support a civil
society.
Restore Afghanistan as a secure and stable state.

WHO IS GOING AND
WHAT WILL THEY BE DOING?
The Force will comprise of the Command elements of Headquarters
52 Brigade, who are normally stationed in Edinburgh. The 1st
Battalion Coldstream Guards will work under command of 52
Brigade. The initial intent was for the Coldstream Guards to
deploy as a Battle Group, all working together under the normal
battalion command structure. This task has now being handed to
the Danes and the Battalion has taken on other responsibilities.
In brief, 1 Company will be stationed at Kabul, 3 Company
working in the Helmand Province area with the Reconnaissance
Platoon and Mortars attached to other Regiments, such as the
Household Cavalry Regiment in the South. The Command, G4,
Administration and other elements are dispersed over the command
area of responsibility but with the majority stationed at Camp
bastion. More exact detail can be obtained from ‘hyperlinks’ on
the Afghanistan Homepage. A number of our soldiers are also
being attached to Right Flank, 1st Battalion Scots Guards, who
are already deployed and operating in Afghanistan.

Locations above were correct
at the time of deployment
The Headquarters of 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards will be
operating in the Helmand province area, south of Afghanistan, as
shown on the map in the information booklet (see Afghanistan
Homepage to download booklet). The location of each element of
the Battalion can and may be subject to change, depending on the
prevailing security and operational requirement in theatre. I
hope you will understand that some times we will not be able to
tell you exactly where and what they are doing, for obvious
security reasons.
