The Runners at The Shatt

The event was a fantastic success, and CSM Roffey would like to personally thank all that took part in the event, and those that helped (in any way) to make this a sucess.

CSM Roffey would also like to record a special thankyou to the QM, RCWO, Post Bunk and EFI for help with the 'Goody Bags' that were handed to all of the runners (chewey bars, drinks, mars bars & power drinks).

The Shatt Al Arab Riviera - 10KM Race
Op Telic 6
by

WOII (CSM) D Roffey

After spending a month at the Shaiba Logisitic Base working with the RSOI team I eventually moved on to join the Battalion at the Shatt al Arab Hotel. On my arrival I soon noticed the great running route around the perimeter wall, where I ran a few laps most days. After a couple of weeks I was told that at the end of June on promotion to Warrant Officer I would be taking over Headquarter Company as the Company Sergeant Major. Delighted with this I then noticed that the Company could to with a touch of fitness, to say the lease. I then came up with the idea of the 10KM race and started making plans.

I was hoping for about 50 to take part, however after distributing a few flyers and carrying out a bit of marketing, the numbers soon swelled. I soon received block bookings from the whole of the MT and Signals Platoon, before long the race was becoming bigger than 'BEN HUR'.

Number Two Company also attended, which I believe was OTA!

A total of 193 runners entered. (returning with the T-Shirts after the R&R turned into a bit of a one man task). Due to operations, and in order to get all the runners in, I had to spilt the race over 3 Fridays (Friday being the day of rest and prayer in Iraq). I set the dates as far to the end of the tour as feasible so the runners could get maximum training in.

On Friday the 23rd of September 05, 51 runners took part, and on Friday 30th of September 32 runners completed the six laps of camp, saving the best until last, on Friday 7th of October a grand total of 128 ran.

Sgt Bennet from the gym gained the fastest time of 34.12 seconds and the prawn seemed to sprint the six laps with ease. Some keen members of the Signals Platoon and No 2 Company ran all 3 races, however the best improved and most effort must go to Guardsman Plant, Melville and Greenhill of the MT Platoon - lets hope they keep it up!

As a look forward, once the Battalion are settled into Windsor, I can see around the corner a 10KM copper horse race in Windsor Great Park - watch this space!

A total of £1,524.60 was raised for the Gdsm David Gratton Appeal of the Signals Platoon.

Thank you to all that helped out in anyway shape or form.
