The Regimental Band of the
Coldstream Guards was formed in 1785 when The Duke of York (the 13th
Colonel of the Regiment) enlisted twelve German musicians to replace the eight
civilians who had up until them provided the music for the King’s Guard.
-
- The Band has
always remained in London and has never proceeded on operations or overseas
postings with the Battalions. However, during the two world wars they
proceeded to operational theatres on several occasions to provide
entertainment for the troops. Perhaps the most tragic event in the history of
the Band occurred on Sunday 18th June, 1944. Whilst playing
for the Sunday service in the Guards Chapel, a German V1 Flying Bomb crashed
through the roof killing 120 people. The Director of Music and five
Musicians were killed, and a further twelve Musicians were injured.
-
- Today the Band
provides music for Public Duties and State Occasions, as well as concerts
throughout the world where it has a reputation for musical excellence.
It also visits the Battalions overseas, and in recent years they have
entertained them in Hong Kong, Cyprus, Germany, Bosnia and Northern Ireland.
