1680
Tangier
was the capital city of the North African country of Morocco. Part of the dowry
of Catherine of Braganza, it was presented to King Charles II when he married
her in 1662. The Moors were not pleased at this
arrangement and continually raided the city.
In 1680 a Composite Battalion, known as the King’s Battalion, comprising of
Coldstreamers and Grenadiers was dispatched to Tangier to reinforce the garrison
there. The Moors were then decisively defeated and peace restored. The Battalion
remained there until 1684 when the King decided that this outpost was too costly
and handed it back to the Moors.
